Western Lowland Gorilla
Baby Western Lowland Gorillas (G. gorilla gorilla) are born helpless and must be carried in the mother's arms. Once delivered, a newborn weighs 1.5 to 2 kg. Growing at twice the rate of a human babies, gorilla infants are able to crawl and ride their mother's back at 3 months of age. They continue to ride on their mother's back until they are 3.5 to 4 years old. This individual was photographed at the Rio Grande Zoo in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
