
Various forms of herpes simplex virus
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a viral infection characterized by blisters and sores that occur around the mouth and nose or on the genitals and buttocks. There are two types, Type 1 (cold sores) an Type 2 (genital sores), that are transmitted by contact with an infected person. HSV infections can reappear periodically and can be serious, but is rarely fatal.
