Texas Thistle, Cirsium texanum. Told from other purple thistles by the leafless flower stalk and right angled short spines on the phyllaries of the flowers' recepticles. It is abundant throughout the grasslands of Central and South Texas. Thistles are members of the sunflower family (Compositae). Photo taken Dallas County, TX
