Splicing the cable (after the first accident) on board the 'Great Eastern', 25 July 1865
This image shows crew members on 25 July 1865 on the board the 'Great Eastern' searching for a fault in the telegraph cable. After retrieving the cable they found that a piece of wire, five centimetres (two inches) long, had been driven clear through the cable, stopping it from working by earthing the current.
