The Pinnacles, about six miles from the rim of Crater Lake are the eroded mineralized remnants of fumaroles and most are actually hollow. They formed 7,700 years ago during the great eruption and caldera collapse of Mt. Mazama that formed Crater Lake. Where ash flows covered streams and bogs gases vented through these vents to the surface. Over time the much softer ash weathered away leaving these bizarre formations. The shading is due to differing silicate content.
