Pediatric Ankle, X-Ray

This color enhanced oblique (angled frontal view) xray of the ankle of a child demonstrates the normal bony anatomy. The growth plates (physes) are the linear luscent (lighter) defects at the ends of the lower tibia (yellow) and fibula (orange). The purple bony structures at the very lower ends of the tibia and fibula are the epiphyses. When fractures occur through the growth plates (physes) the injury is called a Salter-Harris fracture.
