No. 3 Commando Memorial Plaque, Merville Battery
The taking of the Battery was the task of the 9th Parachute Battalion, and despite a complicated plan that went very wrong from the first jumps at 0020 hours on D-Day, the casemates were cleared by 0500. However, the paras went on to their next objective, the high ground around Amfreville, and in their absence the German 736th Grenadiers re-occupied Merville. The following day it was taken by No 3 Commando, hence the plaque that is on the main casemate, now a Museum.
