MUCOSA OF THE COLON, SEM
The colon is that part of the intestine beginning at the end of the small intestine and terminating in the rectum. It elaborates and transports fecal matter. It is about 1.4 m. long. Like the rest of the digestive tract, it is lined with a mucous membrane, composed of an epithelium, glands and connective tissue. The glands in this mucous membrane have a specific physiological function in the uptake of food. Seen here : lining of the colon under SEM x 600.
