
HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS
There are two types of herpes simplex virus: type 1, which causes gingivostomatitis, keratoconjunctivitis and labial herpes, and type 2, a sexually transmitted (venereal) disease which can also be transmitted to newborns during childbirth, causing acute encephalitis. The herpes simplex virus is a large DNA virus (approx. 100 nanometers) with a capsid exhibiting cubic symmetry. Color-enhanced TEM.
