HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a member of the viridae family. This virus develops in the skin and mucosal linings. There are two types of herpes simplex virus. Type 1 causes labial herpes and type 2 causes genital herpes. Painful vesicles develop on the lips and oral mucosa in HSV1 and on the genitals and anus in HSV2. The virus is transmitted by direct contact. Once the virus has entered the body, it is harbored in the nerve ganglions and can redevelop under stressful conditions (emotion, immunodepression…). An antiviral treatment is given when genital herpes recurs frequently. Here the herpes simplex virus (blue) invades a cell. 3D representation.
