Grub of the American stag beetle, Lucanus elaphus. These grubs are borers in rotting oak logs. Adult males of this large beetle possess greatly enlarged mandibles used in dominance battles with other males. The American Stag beetle inhabits forests of the southeastern US west to extreme east TX.
