Gregarin species

Light micrograph of the parasitic protozoa Gregarin sp. These protozoa release sporozoa that are intestinal parasites of the meal worm, Tenebrio molitor. Here, two Gregarin sp. cells have joined together forming a syzygy during sexual reproduction. Once the cells are in contact, their nuclei divide several times, each surrounding itself with protoplasm to form a gamete. The wall separating the two halves of the syzygy will dissolve and each gamete will fuse with one from the other cell. The fused gametes form new sporozoa and are released.
