Giardia lamblia
Light micrograph of the protozoan Giardia lamblia. These protozoa are the cause of giardiasis (or lambliasis), an infection of the small intestine found in tropical areas. Giardia lamblia attach to the microvilli in the human intestine, reducing liquid absorption and leading to diarrhea, abdominal cramps, swelling and nausea. Giardia lambliais are often spread through contaminated food and water. Magnification: 200x at 35mm size.
