Fracture 5th Metacarpal Head in Child

This color enhanced frontal (from the front) xray of boths hands of a child demonstrates a fracture of the left (on your right) metacarpal head. The horizontal linear fracture is actually through the distal metaphysis. The metacarpal is blue. The ephysis is orange. The growth plates (physis) are the linear luscent (lighter) defects at the ends of the bones. When fractures occur through the growth plates (epiphysis) the injury is called a Salter-Harris fracture.
