Fossilized tree trunk in exposed rocks on the beach of Curio Bay, the site of a fossil forest in the Catlins on the coast of south-eastern Southland, New Zealand. The fossilized trees date back to the middle Jurassic and are found mainly in green sandstone where the wood has been replaced by silica, making the fossils resistant to erosion.
