Forensic Anthropology, 3D Facial Reconstruction
An artist, with the help of a forensic anthropologist, creates a 3D facial reconstruction. The process recreates the face of an individual using the skull with anatomical depth markers attached. The markers denote the thickness of the skin and muscles. The selection of depth markers is based on over a century of studies of males and females of different ancestral groups. The artist then fills in the gaps between the markers with modeling clay and sculpts the remainder of the face. Artificial eyes are added to aid in the reconstruction. Ultimately, the results are an approximation, since hair, eye color and the amount of fat cannot be determined from the skull alone.
