Emperor Penguins, Aptenodytes forsteri, on fast ice adjacent to Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica, October, 2007. A young chick, 50-90 days of age, is on the feet of its parent, with only its feathery rump exposed, soon to leave this protected shelter and walk on its own.
