
Emperor Penguin colony, Antarctica
Emperor Penguins, Aptenodytes forsteri, on fast ice adjacent to Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica, October, 2007. Chicks are 50-90 days of age and are still fed by parents. The ice shelf is seasonal and will break up in December, when the chicks must go to sea and feed themselves. The cliffs in the distance are the coastline of Snow Hill Island.
