Hughes salutes the Kop before his testimonial game at Liverpool Football Club. Hughes (1947-2004) started playing for Liverpool in 1967. Nicknamed ‘Crazy Horse’, he captained both Liverpool and the England team. During his time at Liverpool, the team won four league titles, two European Cups, an FA Cup victory and two Uefa Cup titles. Hughes also earned 62 caps for the national team. Hughes won the Football Writers' Player of the Year in 1977 and moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1979, winning the League Cup in 1980. He went on to play for Rotherham, Hull City, Mansfield Town and Swansea City. He also captained one of the teams on the popular BBC quiz show ‘Question of Sport’. He died from a brain tumour aged 57.
