Dome of the rock on Temple Mount. The most famous Islamic site in Jerusalem is the Dome of the Rock. It is not a mosque, but rather a Muslim shrine. It is the third most important shrine in Islam, after Mecca and Medina. It is also an important pilgrimage site. It was built over a sacred stone which is said to be the rock from which the Prophet Muhammad ascended into heaven. It was built by the Muslim ruler Abd el-Malik between 688 - 691 AD. It is also known as the Mosque of Omar., Jerusalem, Israel.
