Costume of a bourgeois man. . Costume of a bourgeois man. He carries an English hat, an old felt Tudor with its plumes removed. He wears a perruque (wig), redingote with wide lapels, small gilet (waistcoat) over a white shirt, and high breeches. Handcolored etching by Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr. from Costumes of the Directory, Rouquette, Paris, 1875. The etchings were made from designs by Eugene Lacoste and Draner after prints of the era 1795-99.
