
California Clapper Rail
The California Clapper Rail (Rallus longirostris obsoletus) is one of the largest members of the Rallidae family measuring 13-19 inches in height. It is hen-like in appearance, with a long bill. Clapper Rails are secretive birds and if disturbed typically freeze or hide in dense vegetation. The California Clapper Rail is currently restricted to the marshes of the San Francisco Estuary, and is a Federal Endangered Species. Palo Alto Baylands NWR, Palo Alto, California .
