Blinded Sphinx Moth Larva
Blinded Sphinx (Paonias excaetus), two 4th instar larvae on Wild Cherry (Prunus serontina) showing color variation. Sphinx caterpillars can feed and rest in any position but more often than not they are seen hanging with their heads pointed down. This species feeds on an incredible number of different species of trees and shrubs. Often it develops local preferences. This transcontinental species is found throughout the eastern US and Canada, west to the Rockies and Arizona. These larvae were photographed in Pennsylvania in late summer.
