Balseros

Cubans known as "Balseros" flee their island for the United States on homemade rafts upon which they hope to cross the Florida Straits. The 90 mile ocean journey is a dangerous crossing that the desperate Cubans are willing to make in hopes of a better life in America. They often depart at dusk to avoid the boiling Caribean sun and the watchful eye of the Cuban and US Coast Guards who would turn them back. Cojimar, Cuba. August 28, 1994.
