Acinetobacter

This illustration depicts a three-dimensional (3D) computer-generated image of a group of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter sp. bacteria, which were arranged in a sheet-like configuration. The artistic recreation was based upon scanning electron micrographic imagery. Acinetobacter is a group of bacteria commonly found in soil and water. While there are many types, or “species”, of Acinetobacter, and all can cause human disease, Acinetobacter baumannii accounts for about 80% of reported infections. Outbreaks of Acinetobacter infections typically occur in intensive care units and healthcare settings housing very ill patients. Acinetobacter infections rarely occur outside of healthcare settings. See the links below for more information regarding the drug-resistant posed by Acinetobacter spp. bacteria.
