A Great Man at his Private Devotion, 1780
This print accuses King George III of having Roman Catholic sympathies; depicting him as a monk with a portrait of the Pope on the wall. Protestants strongly opposed recent reforms that reduced the persecution of Catholics in Britain. Radical groups had rioted in London, destroying Catholic buildings and killing hundreds of people. The King, a staunch Protestant, intervened to end the disorder, to great unpopularity
