
Otto Bader, Soviet archaeologist
Otto Bader (lower left, 1903-1979), Soviet archaeologist, making notes at an archaeological dig in the Crimea area of Russia, on the shores of the Black Sea. Bader, a German-born archaeologist and paleontologist, worked with the USSR Academy of Sciences in the mid-1950s and 1960s. He and his team of archaeologists excavated several important palaeolithic sites, including Sungir and Kapova Cave. Bader also worked at Perm State University (later Saint Petersburg State University). His son, Nikolai Bader, was also an archaeologist. Photographed in 1977.
