For Photographers: About Stock Photography
ADVANTAGES WORKING WITH DIOMEDIA
GENERAL
Stock Photography is existing photography that is available for commercial use - as opposed to assignment photography, which is custom made to someone's specifications. Stock Photography buyers are advertising and design agencies, magazines, book publishers, particularly text books and encyclopedias, calendar and greeting card companies, television and film producers, CD ROM manufacturers, political campaigns, government and not-for-profit organizations. LICENSE TYPES
Rights managed images (L) are "rented" for a specific purpose at a specific price. Once you negotiate a fee with the agency (or photographer) for the specific use you have in mind, any other use is subject to an additional fee. The price of the picture is determined by how you want to use the picture. Generally, the fee you will be charged will be based upon the scope of your project and the permission you receive to use the picture will be limited to that which is outlined on the invoice. Royalty free images (RF) are purchased outright, either as single images or on disc volumes in bulk, and can be used any way you want, with certain restrictions. (More about that later...). This licenses type are most often priced based upon digital file size, and have no concern with how you are actually going to use the images. The smaller the file size you purchase, the less you can do with the image, so, the lower the fee. The larger the file size, the higher the fee. But, once purchased in that file size, you can use the image in any way the size you have purchased will accommodate. With a royalty-free picture you can have absolutely no idea whatsoever, or any control over, who else is going to use it or how they are going to use it Period. From a price point of view, buying royalty free images as disc collections is the most cost efficient way to purchase high-end photography that the planet has so far seen. MODEL AND PROPERTY RELEASE
A model/property release is a written agreement between the model/property owner and the photographer whereby the model/owner gives his/her permission to the photographer to use the photographs commercially in perpetuity (meaning for all time). Releases can permit the use of the image(s) for all purposes, or may contain exceptions for certain usages. In the specific case of Diomedia, where these exceptions are in place the contributor must set the necessary restrictions on the images via the Diomedia web site. Images featuring people and or property without releases can still be sold for "editorial" purposes. This includes images to support text in newspapers, magazines, etc. Images used to support or advertise a product or service are regarded as "commercial" usage and generally require a release. Commercial photo shoots and in particular Royalty-free shoots will be expected by the customer to have the required releases Summary about model/property release
The summary below is intended to provide general guidelines and information with respect to releases.
